Do you know what to do when the mist comes down or how to accurately take and follow a compass bearing? Come along on our intermediate navigation course to find out how. If you would like to start to venture off the beaten track and are happy to follow a simple route along paths and tracks already then this is the course for you. You do not need to have used a compass before but you should have a good knowledge of map symbols and know how to plan and follow a simple route. We will refresh these skills at the start of the day. There will be a maximum of four participants on the course, keeping the group size small means you can be sure of plenty of personal tuition.
We will introduce to you how to devise a strategy for a navigational leg and to break it down into ‘macro’ and ‘micro’ navigation. Then how to use ‘tick-off’ features along the route to check you are going in the right direction. As the day progresses we will teach you how and when to take and follow a compass bearing. As we journey through the terrain we will help you to understand contour features from the map and on the ground. We will also look at learning how to accurately judge distance on the map and on the ground using pacing and timing.
The course costs £60/person and will start at 09:30 running till around 16:30. It start from Calebreck wich is a twenty minute drive from Keswick.
