For a culinary experience to remember, check out the area’s Michelin starred restaurants. There are two stellar options to choose from in north Cumbria. Pick one to enjoy, or make an extra special trip of it with a visit to both. To inspire your visit, here are a few things to do in the local area.

Good to know: The Pentonbridge Inn can be reached by public transport. The nearest train station is Carlisle; from here, buses are available on the 127A Telfords Coaches service to Newcastleton (bus stop Penton, Bridge Inn). Carlisle Station is 12 miles from Farlam Hall; from here, taxis are
available. Brampton Junction is a smaller, unmanned station, served by the line between Carlisle and Newcastle; if arriving here, taxis must be booked in advance.

A Michelin starred restaurant with rooms, offering relaxed fine dining on the English-Scottish border. The seasonally inspired menu has its heart in local produce, with ingredients sourced as locally as the restaurant’s own gardens at Netherby Hall. Pentonbridge Inn also offers cosy, stylish rooms
which can be booked on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis.

Netherby Hall offers luxury self catering accommodation including holiday cottages and apartments in a striking location: they can be found

The Cedar Tree at Farlam Hall

The Michelin starred Cedar Tree Restaurant by Hrishikesh Desai at Farlam Hall takes you on a culinary journey, with expertly crafted dishes served in a light and airy space overlooking an ornamental lake and fountain. There’s a focus on local produce, with many ingredients taken from the restaurant’s own kitchen garden - they’ve even got their own beehive.
Located at Farlam Hall, there are several individually designed rooms to choose from, all with garden views and available to book on a B&B or Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis (with dinner at the hotel’s Bistro Enkel for stays on Sunday - Tuesday evenings; and at the Cedar Tree Restaurant Wednesday - Saturday). Accommodation packages are available to include a Michelin starred dinner at the Cedar Tree restaurant.

Explore Netherby Hall
Netherby Hall is something of an attraction in its own right, with a varied events programme throughout the year. Expect everything from classic car shows and garden open days to Christmas markets and outdoor theatre.
Go Hiking
From history and heritage along the Hadrian’s Wall Trail, to the rugged landscapes of the northern Lake District, there are plenty of walking opportunities to discover.
Gone Fishing
New Mills Trout Farm offers fishing for a range of abilities - with sessions from a few hours to a full day. Rod hire is available, alongside tuition for anyone wanting to brush up on their skills. For river fishing, the Brampton Angling Association offers day and week permits for visiting anglers; these
can be purchased from Brampton Post Office.
A Round of Golf
Brampton Golf Club boasts panoramic countryside views and year round play. A little further afield and located in undulating parkland, Carlisle Golf Club offers golfing for all levels. Around an hour to the south-west, Silloth Golf Club overlooks the stunning Cumbrian coast and is regarded
as one of the country’s finest courses.
A day at the races
Part of The Jockey Club, Carlisle Racecourse plays host to flat racing during the summer months; and National Hunt racing in winter.
Live music from world renowned acts can be enjoyed on selected race evenings too.
Did you know? One of the oldest sporting trophies in the world can be won here. The contest for the Carlisle Bell takes place each summer, having been first run in 1599.
Hadrian’s Wall
Walk in the footsteps of the Romans along the North West frontier of the Roman Empire - the Hadrian’s Wall Trail National Path is the iconic route to follow. Several attractions along the wall tell its story in more detail, including the Roman Army Museum, Banks East Turret, and Birdoswald Roman Fort. Nearby, Lanercost Priory is one of the best preserved Cumbrian monasteries and well worth a quick detour.

Talkin Tarn
For a peaceful experience, head to the pretty Talkin Tarn Country Park: home to a glacial lake, ancient woodlands, footpaths, watersports and
more.

dark skies.
Visit Brampton
Don’t miss a trip to the market town of Brampton: home to quirky shops and historically important churches. Nearby, the Solway Aviation Museum
showcases the wonders of aviation history.
Visit Carlisle
Inextricably linked with the iconic Hadrian’s Wall, Carlisle’s fusion of old and new brings together 2000 years of history with some laid back city living
and urban cafe culture. Standing on the Scottish border, the city has stood witness to countless chapters of history. Uncover countless tales of
times gone by at Carlisle Castle and the Museum of Military Life. Visit Tullie to delve into history, alongside art displays and science exhibitions.
The free-to-enter Carlisle Cathedral has stood for 900+ years. Look up to admire its blue starry ceiling and watch out for a monthly Angel’s View
Tour, which offers visitors the chance to visit the higher levels of the Cathedral and enjoy stunning views of its interior.
Top Tip: The first Saturday of the month sees a popular farmer’s market take place just outside the Cathedral.
