You are here: Home > Things to Do > The Woodsman’s Walk - A Full Day Guided Walk in South Lakes with Green Man Survival
Join us on a guided day out on one of our favourite walks, an off-the-beaten-track route far from the crowds that flock to the Lake District but still ensconced within the National Park.
Our day’s walk will take us through the ancient woodland of Witherslack estate; this 2000 acre estate comprises the largest area of semi-natural woodland in Cumbria. The lofty limestone heights of Whitbarrow Scar dominate the skyline and will provide an impressive vista of Morecambe Bay and Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve.
Meandering through the estate this stunning journey allows us the opportunity to learn and observe coppiced areas of woodland where charcoal was once made by the old “Bodgers”, experience the tranquillity of historical damson orchards and see evidence of red and roe deer who also use the trails, along with a plethora of native flora and fauna. We will as always embrace the opportunity to share our knowledge of the woods and its secrets with you wherever possible.
We will explore the limestone pavements of Whitbarrow Scar learning about clinks and grykes and this fascinating glacial geology. Also, the trees grow sideways up here! Local history and the surrounding environment will be discussed with many opportunities to ask questions and discuss the vast subject of survival, bushcraft and our favourite place to be, the woods. The Woodsman’s Walk comprises some steep climbs but is generally a low-level walk, covering a total distance of approximately 15km. A reasonable level of physical fitness is desirable.
Bring your lunch, boots, waterproofs and a sense of discovery!
