You are here: Home > Things to Do > Dark Sky Canoeing & Star Gazing with Path to Adventure
The Lake District is one of the best places you can visit for Stargazing and is listed in the top 5% of the darkest places in Britain. On a clear evening, we are able to see thousands of stars and constellations including the spectacular Milky Way.
We start the guided tour just before sunset, whilst there is still some light. We’ll make sure everyone has the necessary canoe paddling skills and then set off on our journey across the lake. If you’ve never sat in a canoe before - no problem, we’ll have you paddling along competently in no time! For those with younger children, we have the option to raft your canoes together, making paddling a little easier for smaller arms!
Watch as the sun sets over the mountains as you paddle across the lake. We will stop at a secluded bay for a hot brew and enjoy watching as the first stars come into view.
Using the naked eye and also binoculars, we will identify some constellations and share our knowledge of the myths and history that surround them. We’ll also share any celestial events that are taking place.
On the homeward journey, we will again stop to look up and take in the immense 360 view of the night sky in all its glory. After switching torches off, we’ll paddle back to shore with only the light of our glow sticks, and the sound of our paddles gliding through the inky waters.
