Tripadvisor Traveller Rating
57 reviewsJoin us for a half-day guided woodland walk in the Lake District, learning some bushcraft essentials on the way. An enjoyable morning to be had by the whole family!
Located toward the southern end of Windermere lake, High Dam Tarn is one of the most picturesque locations in the Lake District, but without the crowds of more well-known sites. Our walk will initially take us through stunning ancient woodland. This will provide us the opportunity to discuss and learn about this fantastic and complex environment. Learning points throughout the day may include tracking, plant identification, local history and wildlife observation.
Nearing the brew stop we will pause to collect kindling and tinder to boil our kettle for a much needed brew up. This will be a great time for the whole family to get hands-on with some bushcraft fundamentals. The Kelly Kettle is a fantastic invention and provides us with a small enclosed fire within a genius hollow vessel. It will all become clear when you light it! With our gathered tinder and kindling we will create fire the old fashioned way with sparks onto birch bark. This is how fire used to be lit and many of these skills are quickly being lost.
Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and herbal teas will be served alongside some tasty home baked goodies. Marshmallows and skewers will also be provided for toasting over our fire... what s’more do you need!!
While enjoying our fire and refreshments we will keep our eyes peeled for otters, deer and various bird life. Our walk will then take us further along the shores where track and sign could be seen from the huge population of fauna. Plants and trees make the world go round, this is the perfect time to learn all about lenticels and leaves and how to identify our native species.
Descending is always a relief on the legs. Here we can re cap any information and try our best to answer all the questions you may have.
We soon arrive back to civilization. With goodbyes and stories to be told we will hopefully meet again, maybe next time for another adventure.
