Visit this fascinating historic house, where the elegance of the Victorian era combines with the warmth and welcome of a much loved family home. Situated a short distance from Grange-over-Sands and the magnificent expanse of Morecambe Bay, Holker Hall and Gardens is set in 25 acres of romantic formal and woodland gardens and ancient parkland.
Here, the famous herd of Menil fallow deer showcases nature at its most graceful. Throughout the year the gardens are a riot of colour and texture. Look out for the land feature ‘Pagan Grove’, the peaceful Sunken Garden and the wonderful Labyrinth. The gift shop stocks an interesting range of local produce, including Holker’s own meats and cheeses.
Steam into Central Lakeland on the Original 'Park and Ride'. Since 1869 this unique train/boat connection has provided the most spectacular of gateways to the Lake District. Journey in nostalgic 1950s carriages hauled by one of our fleet of passionately restored and maintained steam locomotives.
Board the steam train at Haverthwaite Railway Station and take the 20 minute journey along the 3.5 mile track of this former Furness Railway branch line to the southern tip of Windermere.
The steam train arrives into Lakeside Pier giving you the opportunity to visit Lakes Aquarium.
From otters and diving ducks to piranha and pike, there is lots to explore at the Lakes Aquarium.
The renovated 1872 café offers a selection of takeaway food giving you the chance to grab a bite to eat before the journey continues, or how about a sumptuous afternoon tea at the Lakeside Hotel & Spa situated on the stunning shores of Lake Windermere?
From Lakeside Pier, board Windermere Lake Cruises to Bowness (duration 45 minutes). Enjoy spectacular views on board England’s largest lake, right at the heart of the English Lake District World Heritage Site. With origins dating back to the Victorian era, the fleet of boats include ‘steamers’ with saloons, promenade decks, teashops and licensed bars.
Once you reach Bowness-on-Windermere, explore the town’s array of independent shops and places to eat and drink. A visit to Bowness wouldn’t be complete without the chance to go to The World of Beatrix Potter™ Attraction - a wonderful experience for all the family.
