The flowers are in bloom, the woods are a carpet of bluebells, wood sorrel and wild garlic. The new leaves shine like emeralds and the sheep have been brought down from the fells to lamb and graze in the warmer, low-lying pastures.
It’s spring in the Lake District, Cumbria, and that means daffodils – those same daffodils that so enchanted Wordsworth – as far as the eye can see, a blaze of yellow after the monotony of winter.
Throughout the county, spring sees the start of outdoor festivals and fairs. From music to food and art to theatre, the calendar of events gets busier and fuller. The stately homes and grand estates are hosting activities to mark the new season and the celebration of Easter. There are egg hunts to be enjoyed, including those with the world’s most famous bunny, Peter Rabbit, born in the imagination of one of the Lake District’s best-known authors, Beatrix Potter.
