Day 1 - Kendal
For your first day, explore the market town of Kendal - just a short 5 minute train ride from Oxenholme. Home to arts, culture and history, there’s plenty to discover! Take your pick from the several museums on offer, before enjoying an evening of live entertainment.
Just a stone’s throw from the train station you’ll find one of Britain’s oldest museums. Founded in 1796, Kendal Museum is home to several internationally recognised collections as well as the largest taxidermy collection in Europe! There’s also the People’s Gallery, which plays host to changing art exhibitions throughout the year.
Around the corner, the Quaker Tapestry Museum is home to 350 years of social history and Quaker stories. There’s lots for families to enjoy, with kids’ activities as well as regular events throughout the year. See over 40 panels of an international tapestry on display, relax with a brew in the on-site cafe, or spend some time in the Peace garden.
There’s also Abbot Hall: one of Britain’s finest small art galleries, today it's home to a fantastic collection of works ranging from historic to contemporary; as well as being a vibrant cultural and community hub with plenty to discover.
If you’ve time, take a gentle stroll to Kendal Castle: perched on a hill above town, these historic ruins are a popular place for a walk and offer great views to boot.
Come evening, be entertained at Brewery Arts: a vibrant cinema and live arts venue with a packed calendar of theatre, music, comedy and more. Their popular restaurant and bar is a great place to enjoy dinner before a show, serving stone baked pizzas and delicious dishes made using seasonal, local produce.
After a full day’s exploring it’s time to relax at your accommodation, with everything from cosy B&Bs to modern hotels. Search and book accommodation in Windermere and Kendal here.
Day 2 - Windermere
Today, hop on the train and head to Windermere. This pretty Lakeland town is just a short train ride away on the Lakes Line, operated by Northern. The train station is centrally located, with Booths supermarket and the popular Lakeland store both next door. Each has its own cafe, offering a great place to refuel before beginning your day’s adventures!
If the weather is good, head up Orrest Head for a short walk with beautiful views from the top. The route begins opposite the station, and there’s an accessible path for trampers too.
Then, head into Bowness on Windermere (either a 1-mile walk or a short bus ride away). Here, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. Fans of Peter Rabbit can visit the World of Beatrix Potter attraction, while the nearby Windermere Jetty Museum offers a look at the history of Windermere, its boats, and the people who worked on them. There’s also a waterfront cafe offering great views and light refreshments.
Get out onto the water with Windermere Lake Cruises, who operate cruises across the lake, stopping at various points of interest including the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Brockhole - where you’ll find Zip World Windermere - and Ambleside.
Stay another night, or head home by train – ready and inspired to plan your next trip to the Lakes!
