As part of Cumbria Tourism’s 50th anniversary, the team are trying out 50 different tourism experiences throughout the year – to help inspire your own days out across the Lake District, Cumbria. Ben and Dan from the CT team visited the Graythwaite Estate to take on their 4x4 Off-Road Driving & Bushcraft Experience and pick up some valuable skills.
Following a beautiful drive around the shores of Windermere we arrived at the Graythwaite Adventure ready to embrace the experience in the wet and windy conditions. We were met by Tim, who gave a friendly and succinct introduction before we were whisked away by Simon in a Land Rover Defender to the start of the private off-road course on Graythwaite Estate.
Simon is an excellent 4x4 instructor and knows the off-road course like the back of his hand. He directed us expertly around the challenging route and took us to some spectacular viewpoints which look out over the estate with Windermere and the fells beyond in the distance. Graythwaite Estate is a beautiful location to hone your 4x4 driving skills, the course is well maintained by the Graythwaite Adventure team and designed to be achievable for all levels of driver with the expert guidance of their instructors. Simon was both informative and entertaining; from pointing out the best lines to take to helping us navigate some pretty big obstacles.
We returned to their bushcraft base, hidden away in the woodland, where Tim talked us through the essentials for outdoor survival. We focused on making a fire and once this was roaring, we boiled the ghillie kettle for hot drinks and toasted marshmallows. Around the campfire, chat was relaxed, fun and educational. This was a great experience combining the excitement of the off-road course with nature and switching off from everything at bushcraft.
This experience is fun for all the family and given Graythwaite Adventure’s status, the driving element isn’t limited to only those with a licence so juniors can get behind the wheel too. The off-roading and bushcraft are suitable for all skill levels and ages and provide an excellent opportunity to access some truly magical surroundings under the watchful gaze of the Graythwaite Adventure team.
If you have never been off-roading before, this is a great place to start!
