You are here: Home > Things to Do > A Taste of the Backcountry - A Full Day Guided Walk in South Lakes with Green Man Survival
Join us on a guided walk exploring Chapel House, one of our favourite forest wanders in the Lake District National Park, certainly one of the best pieces of commercial forestry in the South Lakes. Made up of sitka spruce, larch, Scots pines and western hemlock (I’ll teach you the difference) and an area of ancient broadleaf woodland it hosts a myriad of wildlife and in the autumn a spectacular array of fungi!
We will meet in the morning and set off from the main car park, heading uphill where we will be greeted by one of the best vistas in the Lakes, overlooking Windermere lake and the entire South Lakeland mountains from the Langdale Pikes to the Old Man of Coniston. With a huge range of plants to learn about and an abundance of bird life we will have plenty to keep us entertained.
I bet you had no idea we have 600 species of moss in the UK! Heading out of the forest we will take an old farm track and enjoy the views of Whitbarrow Scar and the Lyth Valley (another fave haunt). Wandering through a working sheep farm and its open grassland gives a glimpse into the beating heart of Cumbria: sheep!
We will soon head back into the forest and have time to enjoy a Kelly Kettle brew under a tarp camp at the gorgeous and picturesque Simpson Ground Reservoir.
This spot is truly magnificent with jumping trout and at the right time of year hundreds of dragonflies racing about. Enjoy your brew and imagine you're in the depths of the Yukon.
We will slowly make our way back to the world and our cars, all good things must come to an end but now you know one of my secret places, I don’t take many folk here, honest!
Our walk today will cover a total distance of approximately 10km.
