525 reviews150ft abseil at Cathedral Quarry
The ultimate adrenaline rush – Explore a hidden quarry then abseil 150ft into its depths!
We'll take you on a guided walk through beautiful woodland and 16th-century slate mines with their rich history. The destination is Cathedral Quarry - bought by Beatrix Potter in 1929 and donated to the National Trust, it is preserved today for its geological interest as an important part of the local landscape.
We’ll guide you through the awesome caverns and tunnels of the quarry and share with you our local knowledge and fascinating history of the quarry. After exploring, we'll make our way to the top where you'll have stunning views out across the Langdale valley. Here at the highest part of the quarry, you will have the opportunity to abseil 150ft back down into the depths!
Our friendly expert instructor will be there to help give you confidence and guide you every step of the way.
Allow 4-5 hours
Abseiling, Hodge Close (Age 12+)
Experience the adrenaline rush!
Challenge yourself and have a go at Abseiling. Hodge Close is a spectacular 85ft high disused green slate quarry in the Tilberthwaite Valley. Experience the adrenaline of abseiling down the massive walls into the depths of the Quarry. Our experienced instructors will be on hand to offer advice and keep you safe.
Hodge Close was mined until the late 1960s and is now flooded creating a spectacular lake in the bottom of the quarry that is almost as deep as the vertical walls are high! With pieces of old mine workings that whisper of times gone by, this venue is spectacular and full of history.
