Hunter Davies OBE is an author, broadcaster and journalist. He was born in Scotland and spent his childhood in Carlisle. Despite moving to London for work Hunter is regularly associated with the Lake District and until his wife’s death in 2016, the couple used to spend their summers here in their second home near Loweswater. The house was in an idyllic location with three lakes within walking distance – Crummock Water, Buttermere and Loweswater. Fells including Grassmoor and Mellbreak form a spectacular backdrop. The same views that have inspired creative souls for generations.
His love of the area spilled over into his work. He wrote a biography of Alfred Wainwright, the famed Lakeland fell Walker and guide book writer. Davies has also produced several books celebrating the stunning Lake District landscape including the best selling guide book ‘A walk round the Lakes’ in 1979 and ‘The Good guide to the Lakes’ in 2003.
Davies is quite the expert when it comes to penning life stories. He wrote the official biography of the Beatles after pitching the idea to Paul McCartney and George Martin. John Lennon, however, was dismissive of the book when it came out.
Hunter Davies is also a prolific ghost-writer for a number of celebrity autobiographies including John Prescott, Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne.
As a journalist, Hunter Davies worked at the Sunday Times and worked his way up to editor of the Sunday Times Magazine. He was a regular columnist in the New Statesman and the Guardian.
Hunter is a regular on the airwaves and his broadcasting work involved a stint hosting ‘Bookshelf’ on BBC Radio Four.
Davies is actively involved in life in the Lake District, Cumbria. He is currently president of the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and founded the Prestigious Lakeland Book of the Year.
He was awarded an OBE in 2014 for his services to literature.
