You are here: Home > Things to Do > Arts and Culture > Let's Go Culture - South Lakes
From our striking coastline to our charming towns and villages, it’s no secret that South Lakeland has inspired countless artists and writers over the years – and their legacy lives on in our landscapes today.
Walk in the footsteps of the radical thinkers and artistic pioneers who were inspired by the area. Discover the places where William Wordsworth lived while he wrote some of his iconic works; explore Beatrix Potter’s former home; admire the view from Brantwood, John Ruskin’s beloved house; visit Ulverston, the birthplace of Stan Laurel; and find inspiration yourself within this magical place.
Country homes such as Blackwell - The Arts & Crafts House offer a glimpse of life in a time gone by, and the chance to see heritage architecture and art as part of the buildings themselves. Outside, there are beautiful gardens including the world's oldest topiary gardens.
Explore contemporary art galleries and exhibitions; dance to live music performances; catch an independent theatre production and so much more. See the talents of a new generation of creatives showcased alongside those of our heritage greats. Interpret our history in an impressive collection of museums, from The Armitt Museum in Ambleside to Kendal Museum, telling the story of South Lakeland, from past to present.
There’s something for everyone, with family friendly events and exhibitions at modern museums like the Windermere Jetty Museum and arts venue like The Coro in Ulverston – so even the youngest of visitors can immerse themselves in our history, arts, and culture.
Given the beauty of our landscapes, it may come as no surprise that we also take art into the great outdoors, with pieces to be seen in mountains and forests such as Grizedale, as part of planned exhibitions which work in harmony with the countryside. You can even try your hand at creating something special yourself, with workshops led by experienced instructors at venues like Farfield Mill in Sedbergh – there’s everything from music to storytelling.
There’s always something going on in South Lakeland: a packed year-round programme of events, theatre, exhibitions and festivals. Join us and discover a rich cultural landscape, be inspired, and learn more about our fascinating history and heritage.
