A rural tour which goes behind the scenes of some of the Lake District and Cumbria’s working farms. A full day tour includes visits to two of Cumbria’s working farms. On the half day tour, you will visit just one.

There will be opportunities to see some Heritage breeds of sheep or cattle, often close-up. Farming life is always busy, changing throughout the year in line with the seasons, however there may be a chance to meet and talk with the farmers.

Bank barns, shippons and iconic farmhouses, what are they and why have they been built as they are?   How have these traditional buildings been adapted for modern 21st century farming?  You will enjoy seeing traditional Lakeland farms which also happen to be at the forefront of the latest farming innovations, such as rewilding, riparian strips, and regenerative farming methods.

The farms you visit are not always the same ones on each tour; we have access to many, so we can be flexible according to your location and desires.  Your guide will explain and interpret what you are seeing as we travel through amazing scenery and villages. There will be opportunities for photographs, and also chances to buy locally sourced items, some produced by the farmers themselves.

Any animals that you encounter on your tour are real farm animals and not “pets”, and the farms are all working farms. The tour is suitable for all people and any age. However, it is suggested that stout footwear should be worn as well as outdoor clothing. You can expect to get muddy shoes. Some of the farms are not practical to visit for those with mobility issues and they may not all be wheelchair accessible, but other farms are. So, please let us know when booking the tour.
