There’s no better place in England to stretch your legs than Cumbria. Whether you’re an avid, well-equipped fell climber or just stick on a comfy pair of shoes to go for a short amble, you’ll find the greatest variety of walking routes of anywhere in the country. Most of the region’s best-known walks are easily accessible from Cumbrian towns, while the mountain of supporting literature – leaflets, pamphlets and guidebooks, including the fell walker’s bible, Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells – means that every step you take will be well mapped. From a gentle stroll to a challenging hill walk or a multi-day trial, Cumbria has walks for every level of interest, but what makes walking here so special isn’t just the variety.
