About Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is one of England’s oldest, longest and most scenic narrow gauge railways, and home to the world’s oldest narrow gauge steam engine, River Irt, built in 1894.
It’s a journey that will delight guests of all ages. Join us as we journey from Ravenglass - the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park - across the estuary, through the hills, past seven request stops, to Dalegarth for Boot station which sits in view of England’s highest mountains.
Relax and enjoy this spectacular journey no matter what the weather, with a choice of cosy covered, half open, or open top carriages for your comfort.
Located at both ends of the line are cafes and gift shops with free Wi-Fi, outdoor playgrounds for our younger guests, and plenty of cycle trails and lovely walks to discover. Documented in his booklet, ‘Walks from Ratty’, the journey was much loved by renowned fell walker Alfred Wainwright. The booklet is available to purchase in our railway gift shops and online.
The Turntable Café at Ravenglass and Fellbites Café at Dalegarth serve a range of hot and cold drinks, a selection of sandwiches, locally sourced pies and cakes, and full meals made to order, as well as takeaway options.
In the Ravenglass Gift Shop or Scafell Gift Shop at Dalegarth, pick up a memento of your trip, from handy items for the home to gifts and railway memorabilia.
At Ravenglass, take a step back in time and explore the fascinating Ravenglass Railway Museum, which tells the story of the railway through displays, artefacts, steam locomotives and interactive features. Entry to the museum is free, however, donations are welcome and go towards maintaining and developing the museum for everyone to enjoy.
