This tour will show you some of Cumbria’s castles, forts, pele towers and other defensive structures.
We will visit at least two castles on the full day tour, and pass other places of interest en route.
On the half day tour, we will concentrate on one area of Cumbria, seeing several sites and visiting one particularly interesting site.
We can tailor the tour to your interests, so can focus, for example, on Lady Anne Clifford’s castles in the Eden Valley; ruined medieval castles and Roman forts; Carlisle’s splendidly imposing Norman castle and city walls; pele and bastle towers in the Eden Valley; the western end of the edge of the Roman Empire defences stretching through the Solway plain to the Irish Sea; Border Reivers and their impact; Hadrian’s wall; the impact of 20th century conflicts on Cumbrian communities; and the location of the last battle on English soil in 1745.
Your guide will interpret what you are seeing, explain how people lived and worked in the area, and the impact conflict had upon them. Their resilience and inventiveness can be seen in the legacy of defensive structures which survives to this day. You will discover the characters from the past who shaped Cumbria as it is today and how their ancestors flourished in more peaceful times.
