Cumbria and the Lake District were made for cycling – road cyclists and mountain bikers of all levels and experience can choose from quiet country lanes, challenging off-road mountain trails offering the chance to test and improve your riding skills, as well as official cycleways and bridleways. These include designated off-road trails at Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests, a selection of cycle paths at Lowther Castle in the Eden Valley, or you could even combine a bike ride with a steam train journey on the Eskdale Trail in the Western Lake District.
Some of England’s most scenic long-distance cycling routes make their way through the Lake District, Cumbria, offering the chance to explore off the beaten track. You can cycle the length of Hadrian’s Wall or discover the Lakes and Dales Loop; tackle part of the Pennine Cycleway or the Coast-to-Coast route; or the 81-mile ‘Bay Cycle Way’ taking riders through the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The immense popularity of cycling here in Cumbria means you don’t even have to bring a bike with you as there are plenty of places to hire a bike whilst in Cumbria – road bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes. Guided cycling is available too, which is a fantastic introduction to the landscape and surroundings.
From gentle country lanes and flat cycle paths skirting alongside a lake to long-distance trails and iconic mountain ascents that will challenge even the fittest cyclist, Cumbria’s landscape offers the perfect cycling territory.
