Born and bred in London, Beatrix Potter first fell in love with the Lake District on a visit to the Lakes in 1882 when her family rented Wray Castle for their summer holiday.
As a teenager growing up in a Victorian family hidebound by middle-class conventions, she must have truly cherished the freedom afforded by this lakeshore vacation in a mock Gothic mansion that had been built some 40 years previously by a retired surgeon from Liverpool.
Her family went on to rent a series of holiday homes across the county for a period spanning more than 20 years. It was her experiences during these long summer holidays that helped to shape her character: she was influenced by the people she met and her observations of nature and the Lakeland landscapes.
Book a tour with a Blue Badge Guide who shares a passion for Beatrix Potter and discover the landscapes that inspired her.
As Miss Potter the writer and artist, or Mrs William Heelis the farmer, she remained a very private person throughout her life. Catch a tantalising glimpse into her world on your tour!
Blue Badge Guides always tailor their tours to the visitor, so contact us today and we will help you to plan a single- or multi-day itinerary, whether travelling by coach or private vehicle.
Many people appreciate seeing the Lake District on foot, and you may prefer a relaxed walking tour including visits to some of her favourite places, which can’t be reached by vehicle, or like to combine a driving tour with short walks.
