On this Grand Lakes Tour you will see many of the 16 major lakes of the Lake District. The list is impressive!
Travel on or along Windermere, England’s longest lake, with its grand houses individually designed for Victorian industrialists. See the mock Gothic castle which was the holiday destination of young Beatrix Potter, one of the many artists and writers to be inspired by the Lake District.
A drive alongside Ullswater will bring you to the spot “beside the lake beneath the trees” where William and Dorothy Wordsworth encountered ‘a host of golden daffodils’.
We will make our way alongside Rydal Water to Grasmere through the area that Wordsworth described as " the loveliest spot that man hath ever found". Perhaps be tempted by a sample of the famous Grasmere Gingerbread.
Perhaps enjoy a cruise on Steamyacht Gondola on Coniston Water, where Donald Campbell made his fatal attempt on the world water speed record in 1967.
During your tour discover how geology and history shaped the area; see the distinctive native Herdwick sheep and dry-stone walls.
Derwentwater lies in the approach to the beautiful Borrowdale valley and a winding, mountainous route offers incredible views as it passes the Honister Slate mine. From the high pass descend to Buttermere: a scenic, tranquil lake with a village of the same name, once home to the “Maid of Buttermere”, subject of a famous story of love and deception.
Visit impressive Castlerigg Stone Circle dating from approximately 3,200 BC.
Your tour can include a gentle walk to see waterfalls, a lake cruise, or visit to a house with literary or historical connections.
Some of the lakes, for example the much-photographed Tarn Hows, can only be accessed by smaller vehicles, so please contact us for more details and book this superb day out.
