You are here: Home > Things to Do > The Heaton Cooper Studio
The Studio was established by the landscape painter Alfred Heaton Cooper in 1905. His artist son William Heaton Cooper built the present gallery in Grasmere in 1938. For generations their paintings and books have influenced the way the landscape of the Lake District has been viewed.
Throughout the year there is a changing programme of exhibitions in the Museum and in the garden, exhibiting works from the gallery archive and other artists.
The studio exhibits paintings, prints, sculpture and books as well as a wider range of artists' materials. At the children's table, young artists can create their own masterpiece. There are also scheduled painting demonstrations; dates can be found on the website.
Four generations of artists are represented, the sculptor Ophelia Gordon Bell (herself the daughter of a famous animal painter, Winifred Gordon Bell), Julian Cooper and his wife Linda.
However, the most loved works are by Alfred and William Heaton Cooper, Father and son. Both distinctively capture the magnificence and the beauty of rock and fell, stream and lake. Adding to the cultural wealth of Grasmere, the artistic counterbalance to Wordsworth's poetry and influence in these parts.
