This tour will get you to the most important and intriguing ports Cumbria has to offer. Their fascinating history covers the Romans, the traders of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, together with its heroes and villains – and a fascinating link with the Titanic.
A great stop is Maryport, where you will find out more about the history of the town from the Romans to today. Who were the Senhouse family and why were they so important to Maryport?
A must-see stop is wonderful Whitehaven: an original fishing village which grew into one of the major ports in England, but is now a tranquil harbour. A famous maritime commander attacked Whitehaven – discover who he was and whether he succeeded. And you can’t leave without a walking tour around the harbour and through the town.
On the Furness peninsula lies Barrow-in-Furness, now a large town and famous for its industry and shipbuilding. Hear about the Vickers company and Vickerstown. Uncover the personal stories of Barrow’s many statues and if time permits, we highly recommend including a visit to the Dock Museum.
The tour can be tailored to your wishes. eg. a half day can be Whitehaven or Barrow-in-Furness only or a full or multiple day(s) with above stops. The day can include visits to the Beacon Museum or the Rum Story in Whitehaven, the Senhouse Museum or the Maritime Museum in Maryport depending on your personal interests and opening times.
