You are here: Home > Things to Do > Wray
Parkland and Gothic Revival castle sitting on the west shore of Windermere providing an impressive backdrop of turrets, towers, informal grounds and miles of lakeshore paths.
The Wray Estate
Set on the shores of England’s largest lake, the Wray estate provides miles of lake shore paths, parkland and woodland walks with panoramic views to enjoy. Wander the grounds and spot the changes of the seasons from snowy mountain peaks to daffodils blooming on the lawn. For those looking for a longer adventure head down the west shore path down to Claife Viewing Station, perfect for a bike ride, or up to Blenham Tarn on a circular countryside walk.
Joey’s Café is open every day of the year (excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) serving hot and cold drinks, vegan cakes and light bites to eat in or take away. Or pack a picnic and we’ll provide some of the best views in the Lakes for your lunch spot.
Leave the car behind and set sail on the Windermere Lake Cruises Green Cruise* from Ambleside and head across the Lake to Wray’s own jetty. We think it’s the best way to arrive!
*Easter to September
Inside Wray Castle
The castle came to the National Trust without its contents, so you will not see a 'typical' historic house full of paintings, furniture and antiques. This year the ground floor will be open for you to view the interesting architectural features of the castle and a photography exhibition featuring the work of Rupert Potter, Father of Beatrix who stayed at Wray Castle on her first trip to the Lake District. Entry to the Castle is free for everyone. No access to upper floors.
Advanced booking not needed for parking or castle entry. Car park charges apply to non-National Trust members.
