South Lakeland is well known for its stunning landscapes, but did you know it is also home to an abundance of cultural experiences?
February sees a whole host of exhibitions, events and theatre shows to discover – there’s always something to see and do. Discover for yourself with this special place has inspired poets, authors and artists for generations and enjoy the work of the current generation of talented artists who have fallen in love with this land of lakes and fells.
Discover local history and heritage with a visit to The Ruskin Museum in Coniston, or the Armitt Museum in Ambleside. A large-scale paper installation by Kendal-based visual artist Amy Williams. Produced with local community groups, the installation unearths hidden or lesser-known stories of extraordinary women from Cumbrian history.

Farfield Mill | Exspiravit – Decorum Textile Artists

Founded in 2017, Decorum is a group of five women artists who work in close collaboration. Their practice takes on many forms as they aim to convey traces of past lives through the observation of the present. ‘Exspiravit’ features new works inspired by the Rachel Kay Shuttleworth Archive housed at Gawthorpe Hall.
Kendal Museum – The People’s Gallery | Wild Waters Exhibition

This exhibition by artist and photographer Lavinia Haslam focuses on current trends around wild water swimming, and visualises activities surrounding Windermere beyond the ideals of traditionalism. It is accompanied by a soundtrack by Mikey Elliot.

Abbot Hall Art Gallery to Reopen on May 20th
Located in the heart of Kendal, Abbot Hall has been home to the Lakeland Arts collection for 60 years, and includes a variety of painted works from George Romney; as well as work by Dame Barbara Hepworth, JMW Turner, and John Ruskin. Following extensive refurbishment, Abbot Hall will reopen on 20 May 2023 with a new exhibition by internationally recognised artist Julie Brook.
Brantwood to Reopen in March
Brantwood in Coniston was once home to John Ruskin; today, visitors can explore the 250-acre estate. After a period of maintenance, Brantwood will reopen to the public in March, with a brand-new reading room to in which to relax.
