Have you ever seen a ghost walk across the landing in a medieval castle? Can you recognise the faint echo of witches cackling on the wind? Or the sight of a zombie stretching its legs after 500 years in a coffin? It can only be Halloween in the Lake District, Cumbria.
Cumbria is a favourite not only for visitors, but also for ghosts and ghouls who no doubt love our wealth of ancient castles, stately homes, and spooky forests. If you are looking to be scared out of your wits this year there are plenty of terrifying events suitable for all ages.

Halloween Festival at Muncaster Castle
Where better to celebrate Halloween than at one of Britain's most haunted castles?
Muncaster Castle in the Western Lake District is hosting their annual Halloween Family Festival between October 21st - 29th, and everyone is invited to join in the spook-tacular fun. There's a costume competition, spooky maze, food and drink stalls, Frankenstein Castle Tour, and plenty more.
New for 2023 is Scarecaster: a scarier night festival for grown ups (18+ recommended)! Taking place on 20, 21, 27 & 28 October from 5pm - 11pm, it features a scary maze where the Seven Deadly Screams await. There's also The Vanishing - an immersive poltergeist experience. Some dates are already sold out, so book ahead to avoid missing out.
Arachnaphobia at Zip World Windermere
Zip World Windermere's Treetop Nets have been taken over by eight-legged monsters this Halloween half term (21 - 31 October). You'll have one hour to survive the beasts' lair as you bounce through the trees; watch out for the spider-human hybrids who lurk around the corner! Located at Brockhole on Windermere, the activity can be enjoyed alone; or as part of Brockhole's Pumpkin Passport Plus, which includes over twenty additional Halloween activities across the site (21 - 29 October).
Pumpkin Picking at Walby Farm Park
Walby Farm Park's annual pumpkin picking is back for another year - and there's plenty of family fun to enjoy! There are lots of fang-tastic activities, including pumpkin picking and carving; adorable farm animals; indoor and outdoor play; and more. There's a FREE pumpkin for every paying child, and spooky food and drink in The Cowshed Cafe. Grab your wellies and enjoy a ghoulishly fun day out.
2023 also sees Pumpkin Picking After Dark: on the 20th and 27th October, between 6:30pm - 9pm. There'll be live music, food and drink, and - of course - pumpkin picking!
Frightening Folklore with Tallow Tales at the Hawkshead Grammar School Museum
At the Hawkshead Grammar School Museum, prepare to be scared with local teller of Cumbrian folklore and original horror stories Tallow Tales. On the 27th October at selected times throughout the day, there'll be Frightening Folklore at the museum - no booking is required, and sessions are included in the museum's admission price.
Halloween Week at Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
The family-friendly Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway are inviting you to enjoy a week of ghoulish goings on this half term, with their Halloween Week extravangaza between the 21st - 29th October!
There will be plenty of Halloween fun to celebrate the spookiest season of them all. See the stations decorated in their frightening finery, travel on board limited 'double header trains', enjoy a witch-trail hunt, and more. There's also spooky storytelling in the Ravenglass Railway Museum.
Halloween Half-Term at Carlisle Castle
Head to Carlisle Castle this half term for a bewitchingly brilliant day out. There are spooky stories, ghastly games, Halloween history and a Halloween quest to become a wicked witch's apprentice. All this takes place amidst the historic surrounds of Carlisle Castle, between 28 October - 5 November.
Monster Mash Halloween Party at The Swan Hotel & Spa
Enjoy an evening of mischief and magic at The Swan Hotel & Spa's Monster Mash party, taking place on Thursday 26th October. There'll be a delicious dinner and a UV disco with spooky tunes to keep little horrors dancing. Tickets are £10 per child and adults go free.
Halloween Activities with The National Trust
This Halloween, enjoy a range of frightully fun Halloween activities at National Trust properties across the Lake District, Cumbria. There's pumpkin carving at Allan Bank, spooky creative sessions at Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, a Halloween themed Taste of Townend, and plenty more.
Twilight Tales at Dove Cottage
What better place to hear a ghost story than the spooky cottage once home to William Wordsworth. Dove Cottage at Wordsworth Grasmere are serving hot chocolate, gingerbread, and Halloween crafts with the kids dressed up in Georgian costumes. At Twilight it’s time to settle down for a series of spooky tales.
Mini Movies Halloween Special at Brewery Arts
Kids under the age of 9 (and their grownups) can head to Kendal's Brewery Arts on October 28th for a Mini Movies Halloween Special watch party of The Nightmare Before Christmas, followed by creative activities linked to the film.
Explore After Dark
A great way to spend Halloween is to take advantage of the open spaces of the Lake District, Cumbria and enjoy an atmospheric night-time walk. The Cumbria Dark Skies Festival returns on the 28th October, bringing with it a series of after-dark events including photogrpahy workshops and starlit canoeing.
