Cumbria is known for its food and drink, and it’s a reputation which is well deserved. At the Cumbria Tourism Awards, a number of categories pay homage our local food and drink establishments and producers. Here’s our run down of our Food & Drink themed Award winners, from Michelin stars to gin distilleries.
The Yan at Broadrayne

Located on a former 17th century farm, The Yan at Broadrayne is a family-run, contemporary bistro with rooms just a stone’s throw from the idyllic village of Grasmere. The menu focuses on seasonal flavours, inspired by the farm's history. Sustainability is key: pre-ordering is encouraged to reduce food waste, the menu is carbon calculated, and ingredients are sourced as locally as possible - some from just steps away on the farm itself!
Allium at Askham Hall

Located in the Eden Valley, Allium at Askham Hall is a Michelin starred restaurant headed up Head Chef Richard Swale and ‘Maitre de Maison’ Nico Chieze. The menu offers imaginative and creating dining, using local produce from the 800 year old Lowther Estate on which it can be found; while the wine list is diverse and exciting. The two combined, along with friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere, create a dining experience to remember.

The Dalesman Country Inn

Nestled in the heart of Sedbergh, The Dalesman Country Inn is known for its warm welcome; and its dedication to using the best quality, seasonal, locally sourced produce. They boast two AA Rosettes, and work directly with local farmers and producers to source quality ingredients with minimal food miles. From afternoon tea to their own 'Sedbergh Gin', they also offer something a little different - all in a cosy, country inn setting in which to relax.
Bassenthwaite Lake Station

With a stunning location on what was once the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway line, Bassenthwaite Lake Station has gone from strength to strength since opening in 2021. This quirky cafe and special events venue offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea with a twist: they’re all served on board the Orient Express train used in the 2017 movie, Murder on the Orient Express! You can also dine in the former ticket station; reservations are recommended and all are welcome, including well behaved dogs on leads.
