There are some charming towns and villages dotted across the Eden Valley and North Pennines, with plenty to discover – from local markets to history and heritage.
Penrith is a great place to indulge in some retail therapy, with independent shops and national names; as well as its fascinating 14th century castle, which is well worth a visit. In the Eden Valley, discover a rich variety of bustling markets towns – including Alston, one of England’s highest.
The scenic Settle to Carlisle railway runs across the area, stopping at Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, making for a great way to get around; with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes as you travel.
