Cumbria is a fantastic destination for foodies, with a whole host of culinary delights to discover. From local ingredients to handcrafted spirits, cosy country pubs to Michelin star meals, there’s something for everyone.
Take the Avanti West Coast Mainline Service to ‘Penrith, The North Lakes’ train station. From here, hop on the X4 or X5 Stagecoach bus service and make the short journey to the ‘Stainton, Town End Farm’ stop. A short walk away, you’ll find Dalemain Country House and Mansion: home to the World’s Original Marmalade Awards. The Awards and accompanying marmalade festival take place annually in April, while Dalemain itself is open until the end of October for visitors to explore. You’ll also find award winning marmalade on sale at the house; and there’s a tearoom which makes for a great place to relax over coffee and cake, before continuing your journey. If your visit falls outside of Dalemain’s opening dates, simply stay on the X4 or X5 to the Lakes Distillery.
From Dalemain, walk back to the ‘Stainton, Town End Farm’ stop and take the X4 bus service towards Keswick (note: remain on the bus at Keswick, as it will continue on towards Cockermouth). Admire the views as you travel, before alighting at your next stop: ‘Dubwath, Lakes Distillery’.
Tip: the X5 bus service towards Keswick, then Cockermouth, will also take you to the Lakes Distillery – instead of being dropped off right outside, you’ll need to alight at ‘Dubwath, Turn’ and walk for 15 minutes.
The Lakes Distillery makes gin, vodka and whisky, with distillery tours available, followed by a tasting of the three spirits. For whisky fans, a two-hour whisky experience offers a deeper insight into the creation of the drink.
After lunch at the distillery’s Bistro, it’s time to continue your foodie tour of the Lakes. Hop on the X4 or X5 service to Keswick and connect with the scenic 555 bus towards Kendal, which will transport you to Grasmere, along a stunning route which travels along the shores of Thirlmere.
The pretty Lakeland village of Grasmere is home to local delicacy, Grasmere Gingerbread®. Available to buy at the Grasmere Gingerbread® shop, next to Grasmere’s church, its secret recipe has captivated visitors ever since it was first made in 1854.
Spend the night in Grasmere: there are several accommodation options to choose from. The Yan at Broadrayne is a contemporary bistro with beds, located on a 17th century former farm and serving dishes inspired by the farm’s rich history.
After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to continue your culinary adventures.
From Grasmere, the 555 runs through the heart of the Lake District. Stop off at nearby Ambleside and stock up on local produce at the Lake District Farm Shop, where everything on the shelves is sourced from local Lake District producers.
While here, treat yourself to lunch at The Old Stamp House (also a great dinner option): a Michelin starred restaurant in Ambleside, serving a menu inspired by the local area. Book ahead to be sure of getting a table.
Then, take the bus to Windermere and discover Booths: a supermarket which stocks a wide range of local food and drink, offering the perfect chance to pick up some culinary souvenirs of your trip. From here, you can take the train to Oxenholme, The Lake District to continue your journey home with Avanti West Coast (Booths is located right next to Windermere train station).
Or, continue on the 555 bus service to the village of Staveley where you’ll find Hawkshead Brewery: a beer hall and brewery serving food and drink in a relaxed setting. From Staveley, the Lakes Line runs directly through to Oxenholme, The Lake District where you can make your journey home.
