You are here: Home > Things to Do > Beginner's Navigation Course with More Than Mountains (Keswick)
This one day introduction to map reading and navigation is suitable for anyone who would like to plan and follow a route from a map.
This course meets in Keswick where we will introduce you to different map scales and symbols and then how to orientate the map, turning it around to line up the features on the groupnd with those on the map. Setting off on a walk we will use the orientated map to identify features along the way and help indicate the direction of intended travel. There will be the opportunity to practise simple navigation strategies to plan and effectively follow the route. This includes how to estimate distance on both map and ground. Along the way we we help you to understand contour lines how you can recognise the shape of the ground from the contour lines on the map. Also we will show you how to take a 6 figure grid reference for any given position on the map. We will discuss different weather forecasts, access rights and how to call out Mountain Rescue in an emergency. We will be outside for the whole day on this course but we will take our time and there will be plenty frequent stops. There is not much ascent in the day but you will need to be happy to be out walking all day. We recognise the benefit of being in a smaller goup so we keep our courses to a maximum of four participants so you will not be overlooked.
It is amazing just how much detail there is on an Ordnance Survey map and we will show you how to make the most of it. It’s a friendly, practical course and you will come away inspired and with the confidence to get out walking much, much more.
The course costs £60/person and will start at 09:30 running till around 16:30.
