You are here: Home > Things to Do > Derwentwater Round with Contours Holidays (Stile-Free)
Setting off from the thriving market town of Keswick, the Derwentwater Round takes you straight down to one of the Lake District’s best-known bodies of water, where you can see the boats launch from the jetties and watch families of ducks swim serenely across the water. The path then meanders towards Friar’s Crag, with unrivalled views towards Borrowdale, which John Ruskin once rightly described as ‘one of the finest views in Europe’.
The route continues towards Calfclose Bay, with an ever-changing view of the lake and its collection of little islands, framed with a fantastic mountain backdrop, before passing the majestic Castle Rock on route to the south end of the lake and the wetlands. The village of Grange comes next, with its pretty little bridge and tea shops; the perfect place to rest weary legs and simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. After this, the route continues up onto the side of the Catbells fells, with views stretching across to the east of the lake and up towards Walla Crag, before dropping down through ancient woodland to Lingholm. It is here where you’ll find the walled garden that Beatrix Potter credited as the inspiration for Mr McGregor’s Garden in the Tale of Peter Rabbit.
The final stretch of the walk passes through the village of Portinscale, before arriving back in Keswick town centre with its many shops and cafes. Overall, the Derwentwater Round is a fantastic starter adventure: a well-signposted, easy route offering ample opportunities for wildlife-spotting, uncovering local history, and simply relaxing and taking in the awesome panoramas throughout.
As a Stile-Free route, the Derwentwater Round has no stiles or other challenging obstacles to contend with. Any climbs or descents are short and/or gentle. It is suitable for beginners, young families and those with mild mobility impairments, and it is also a dog-friendly route.
