From the bustling little town of Keswick, the North Lakes Short Break route heads along the shores of Derwentwater to the famous beauty spot of Surprise View and the picturesque hamlet of Watendlath. From Watendlath, the trail then meanders past lily-covered Dock Tarn to the idyllic hamlet of Stonethwaite, where riverside paths lead to Rosthwaite, a lovely old village of whitewashed cottages and farms in the upper reaches of Borrowdale.
After exploring Rosthwaite, the trail continues along the old tourist coach ‘road’ to the top of Honister Pass, before following an old miners’ track that descends beside Warnscale Beck. There are some truly breath-taking views over Buttermere and Crummock Water here, which are worth pausing to admire before pressing on to the village of Buttermere.
The final stage of this delightful trail begins by following a superb footpath that climbs gently between imposing fells to emerge into the tranquil beauty of the Newlands Valley, where atmospheric woodland, rolling fields and serene lakeside paths lead back through the village of Portinscale to Keswick. Here, you can celebrate the end of your walk by enjoying delicious local fare at a variety of wonderful eateries, surrounded by some of Lakeland’s fantastic scenery.
Aside from the epic views that the Lake District is famed for, some other highlights of the North Lakes Short Break trail include uncovering the story of the island heritage of a Celtic saint, passing through Johnny Wood and spotting elusive red squirrels, wandering the quaint cobbled streets of various towns and villages, admiring the epic power of Scale Force — Lakeland’s highest waterfall — and visiting the landscapes that inspired the literary works of Beatrix Potter. This route is also dog friendly for those wishing to holiday with their canine companions.
