Commencing from the wonderful town of Ambleside, this delightful circular walk explores the heart of the Lake District, following ancient tracks over mountain passes linking valley to valley. These ways were originally established by drovers moving sheep and cattle, traders leading packhorses and mourners taking their loved ones for burial in consecrated ground. By following in their footsteps, this route takes in all of the major valleys in the Lake District, visits twelve of its most famous lakes and explores several attractive Lakeland villages and towns, such as Elterwater, Coniston, Seathwaite, Boot, Wasdale Head, Buttermere, Keswick, Glenridding, Grasmere and Ambleside.
The scenery encountered during this walk is truly spectacular, and a proud showcase of everything the Lake District National Park has to offer. Some unmissable views on the Lakeland Round include looking to Coniston Water from Walna Scar; standing at Loughrigg and seeing Windermere, Grasmere, Elter Water and Rydal Water; spying Wasdale and Wastwater from Burnmoor Pass; admiring mountain panoramas from Black Sail Pass; and plenty more to discover along the way.
There are countless other points of interest along this walk as well, each providing a unique insight into the Lake District’s extensive cultural and industrial history. Ponder the mysteries of Castlerigg Stone Circle, explore the 16th century mill of La’al Ratty, feel the immense force of the Lake District waterfalls, and take in the many fantastic locations that directly inspired the literary works of Arthur Ransome, William Wordsworth and many more.
The Lakeland Round is an ideal walk for the first-time visitor to the Lake District, as it visits many of the most famous beauty-spots in the National Park, as well as a few of the little-known gems. It is also a great walk for experienced walkers as it is easy to modify the route to take in a few peaks each day. Dog-friendly holidays are also available for this route.
