Greystoke Castle, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, invites you to step back in time and immerse yourself in a captivating 800-year history where history, mystery adventure, intertwine.
Originally built in the 12th century, this magnificent Castle was the proud seat of the noble Greystoke/Howard family, whose legacy is steeped in royal connections and historical significance.
One of the most fascinating chapters in its rich history involves Catherine Howard, who spent her formative years at Greystoke before her ill-fated marriage to King Henry VIII. Her dramatic life story, filled with royal intrigue and tragedy, adds an air of mystery to this already enchanting place.
The Castle will also be forever linked to the legendary tale of Tarzan. In the early 20th century, author Edgar Rice Burroughs drew inspiration from Greystoke Castle to create his iconic Tarzan of the Apes. This connection has made Greystoke Castle a must-visit destination for fans of the Tarzan story, blending the realms of real history with the magic of fiction.
The Castle now features Tarzan Trails, perfect for dog walkers and nature lovers alike, allowing visitors to enjoy the breath-taking scenery while exploring this historic masterpiece.
After 800 years of history, Greystoke Castle is being lovingly restored and has now opened its ancient oak doors to the public.
Explore its grand halls, ancient corridors, and sprawling grounds on a guided tour. Each corner tells a story of centuries gone by. The Castle also offers a variety of family-friendly activities, from seasonal events to medieval re-enactments, artisan markets and live music performances.
When you’re ready to unwind, the quaint Butler’s Pantry café awaits, serving delicious refreshments in a cosy atmosphere with views overlooking the Castle lake and stunning surroundings.
Whether you're a historic house enthusiast, a Tarzan fan, or simply seeking a beautiful place to relax, Greystoke Castle is the perfect destination where history, mystery, and adventure come to life.
