Eycott Hill is a great place to take a short walk with amazing views across Lake District fells. With no long walk-in to get up high, you can park on location and it is a suitable walk for all the family. The 0.8 mile trail from the car park will take you to the summit of Eycott Hill, via a view point where you can sit and take in the hills beyond.
There are several wildlife habitats to enjoy along the way. As you leave the car park you walk alongside beautiful restored hay meadows – a joy to see in June and July. After this the trail drops down into wetlands where you can spot small pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies, four-spotted chaser dragonflies, and large red damselflies. The trail rises again to take you to the summit.
Eycott Hill is a great place to visit if you’re interested in geology. Shaped by volcanic activity 460 million years ago, the ancient lava flows are still visible across the site. Pale feldspar crystals can be seen in the rocks on the western side. Sedge and Sphagnum mosses grow between the lava ridges creating special wetlands.
Dogs on leads are welcome. Native cattle grazing all year round.
