Home to lakes, mountains and stunning natural landscapes, Cumbria is the perfect place for an adventure. Whether you’re looking for family friendly activities, or are in the mood for a long distance hike, we’ve got you covered with this car free itinerary which takes in beautiful walking and cycling routes.
Take the Avanti West Coast Mainline Service to ‘Penrith, The North Lakes’ train station. From here, hop on the Stagecoach 508 service towards Windermere to begin your adventure at Ullswater.
Alight at Pooley Bridge and explore the village or enjoy a ride on one of Ullswater ‘Steamers’ beautiful heritage craft– the perfect way to take in the tranquillity of the Ullswater Valley. When you board the bus ask your driver for the combined Ullswater bus and boat ticket. You can then take any sailing – enjoy a cruise down to Glenridding where you can rejoin the 508 service.
Journey down the lake until you reach the ‘Matterdale, Aira Force’ bus stop. From here, it’s a short walk to the stunning Aira Force waterfall; you can then head to Glenridding along a route of around 3 miles, or hop back on the bus. This walk is part of the Ullswater Way, a 20-mile circular route which winds its way around the lake.
Upon arrival in Glenridding, head to The Glenridding Hotel or The Inn on the Lake to refuel. From here, you can walk back to Pooley Bridge along the east side of the lake, or step on board an Ullswater ‘Steamers’ boat to cruise along the water, taking in the view as you rest your legs.
Back in Pooley Bridge, there are several accommodation options to choose from, including The Crown Inn at Pooley Bridge; 1863 Bar Bistro Rooms; and Hillcroft Park. If you enjoy water sports and unique experiences, stay at Another Place: there is a request bus stop at the top of their driveway. With lakeshore access, they offer a range of water-based activities to enjoy just a few steps from your room.
After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast at your accommodation, take the 508 bus back into Penrith to pick up a hire bike from Arragons Cycle Hire. A collection point can be found at Penrith train station; and you can choose between electric hybrid bikes, all-terrain bikes, and gravel & road bikes. They are also happy to recommend routes – and with some stunning countryside around, there are plenty to choose from!
A popular choice is to cycle to Lowther Castle, with family friendly routes available. Lowther Castle makes for a great place to stop for lunch, with an on-site café serving light bites; then, you can explore the impressive ruins of this once grand castle. There are cycle trails across the Lowther Estate; spend some time exploring before you head back to Penrith to drop off your bike and make your way home.
Arragons can deliver bikes to certain accommodation providers within 15 miles of Penrith, including Hillcroft Park and Another Place.
