Picture this. You've reached the belay. Above you, another hundred metres of perfect rock. Below, past the immaculate pitch you've just climbed spreads a glorious green Lake District valley dotted with dark crags, rushing streams and the occasional grazing sheep.
The peaceful sounds of a Cumbrian mountain summer rise in the air. In the distance, the silvery sheen of the sea. Tie on, sit back. Maybe you're a mid-grade crag rat. Tick the classics on Dow Crag, Gimmer or Esk Buttress. Or perhaps you're pushing the upper grades? Lakeland rock has proved a forcing-ground of climbing standards for each generation and steep, modern test-pieces abound.
Not quite a crag rat yet? Many see scrambling as adventure in its purest form - an interesting activity that's not really climbing yet involves the use of hands on rock. For ambitious walkers, scrambling can prove an exciting step onwards adding spice and interest to a big Lake District climbing adventure day out.
If rocks aren’t your thing, take to the trees. Climb up amongst the foliage and release your inner monkey by having a tree top adventure. The Lake District offers the ultimate zip wire experience, with seven forest zip lines totalling an impressive 3km through Grizedale Forest. Add some swinging logs and shaking steps and the only thing you’ll be thinking about is doing it all again. The Cumbrian landscape is perfect for adventure.
